I was able to catch up with Pursuit of Jade this weekend. It premiered on March 6 with five episodes, followed by two new episodes released daily. I have to say, it’s quickly climbing to the top of my favorite C-drama list!
It’s easily my favorite out of all the dramas I’m currently watching and even among the ones I’ve watched since the beginning of the year. Not that the list is very long yet (I’m still catching up on How Dare You? and Generation to Generation).
But even so, I feel pretty confident saying that Pursuit of Jade is already high on my favorites list, and if the quality stays this strong for all 40 episodes, it definitely has the potential to become my number one.
I will only talk about the first 2 episodes for this review. From the very beginning, this drama already pulled me in. There’s already so much to love, from the characters to the atmosphere and the slow-building romance.
Let’s talk about it.
Release Date: March 6, 2026
Genre: Historical, Romance
Episodes: 40
Where to Watch: iQIYI, WeTV, Netflix
The Story So Far
Fan Changyu’s life hasn’t been easy.
Her parents are dead, and she works as a butcher to support herself and her younger sister (who is very adorable). In a small village where gossip spreads faster than wildfire, she’s constantly labeled as “jinx.” People blame her for everything, from her parents’ deaths to her broken engagement with Song Yan.
Apparently, she was born under a cursed star. Because of that, Song Yan’s family canceled their engagement, despite the fact that Changyu’s family had helped them countless times.
On her way home, she encounters a wounded man named Yan Zheng. Even though she doesn’t know him, she helps him out of pure kindness. That one act of compassion eventually leads to something unexpected: a marriage of convenience.
What I Loved So Far
A Strong and Resilient Heroine

Fan Changyu (played by Tian Xiwei) is exactly the kind of female lead I love. She’s strong both physically and mentally. She works hard, can do manual labor, and refuses to let people walk over her. If someone insults her or spreads nonsense, she calls them out immediately.
She can also beat several men at once. Her father taught her martial arts, which makes her even more interesting as a character. She’s extremely capable and determined to survive no matter what life throws at her. Watching her stand up for herself is incredibly satisfying.
At the same time, she is soft and gentle to those people she cares about and who are good to her. Also, her being a little embarrassed in front of a handsome young man, even telling Channing to stop telling people that she is a butcher and trying to appear as a delicate girl, gives her character nuance.
The Chemistry Is Excellent
I did not expect the leads’ chemistry to hit this quickly, but here we are. Fan Changyu and Yan Zheng already have a really natural dynamic.
Yan Zheng (played by Zhang Linghe) is quiet and reserved, yet there’s a fire burning beneath the surface. He’s the kind of character who will slowly reveal deeper layers as the story unfolds, and I’m looking forward to knowing more about his past.

Despite him being a toughened general based on the flashbacks, he has a soft heart. He sympathizes with Changyu’s situation, understands the burden she carries, and comforts her. Her being a butcher and a not-so-delicate lady surprises him at the start but doesn’t really bother him that much. In fact, it makes him admire her more. They already have this tacit understanding of each other’s hearts, and we haven’t gone to the actual romance yet.
The fact that he agreed to the marriage without hesitation? My romance-loving heart is already sold.
Marriage of convenience + slow-burn feelings later is one of my favorite tropes.
Song Yan… Is Not Winning Any Points
Meanwhile, Song Yan is giving major useless energy. He’s very much a mother’s boy and did nothing to defend Changyu when his family broke off their engagement or when his mother is looking down on her. And they are supposed to be childhood sweethearts, with her family supporting him with his studies. First appearance and he is instantly unlikable.
But he’s also a future official, which makes me think he’ll definitely play a bigger role later in the story.
Also, if you feel like looking at him feels weird, there’s a reason for that. They used CGI to replace the original actor’s face (He Changxi) because he was embroiled in a scandal (a scandal being on a BL drama and dating a man). So, keep that in mind.
The Costumes and the Cozy Village Atmosphere
I really love the styling and costumes so far. Everything feels visually pleasing, and Tian Xiwei looks gorgeous in every scene. Zhang Linghe has an amazing visual too, they both look so good.

The overall vibe of the drama is beautiful. The cinematography is stunning in a quiet, grounded way. The small village setting feels warm (even though it’s always snowing), nostalgic, and cozy. I love the dynamic of the neighborhood, it feels so realistic. A small village where everyone knows everyone. And the gossipmongers who find entertainment in other people’s lives.
It’s the kind of drama where you enjoy just existing in the world for a while.
The Puppet Shadow Foreshadowing
One of the most interesting touches in the first episode is the shadow puppet performance.
The performance at the beginning seems to describe the main protagonist, almost like a symbolic introduction to Changyu’s character. Then later, another performance hints at the future, and it definitely suggests things are going to get much more intense.
I love when dramas use storytelling elements like this. It adds depth and makes you pay attention to the details.
Should You Watch This?
If you love:
- Strong and resilient female leads
- Marriage of convenience tropes
- Slow-burn romance
- Cozy village settings
- Historical dramas with beautiful cinematography
…then this drama might be right up your alley.
It has a compelling heroine, an intriguing male lead, and a story that hints at bigger political and emotional stakes ahead.
After just two episodes, I’m genuinely excited to see where the story goes next. The hype is definitely deserved. Highly recommended.
