In a capital ruled by whispers and political traps, pretending to be weak might be the strongest move of all. Royal Rumours is a lighthearted, slow-burning romance wrapped in court intrigue, blending political maneuvering with playful banter and a heroine who is far more formidable than she lets on.

What It’s About

Royal Rumours follows Hua Liuli, the daughter of the powerful Hua family, who is ordered by the emperor to live in the capital as a political hostage. With the Hua family commanding immense military influence on the battlefield, the royal court grows wary of their rising power. To keep them in check, Hua Liuli is summoned to the palace, where she pretends to be a fragile and sickly noblewoman meant to be easily controlled.

Unbeknownst to most, Hua Liuli is far from weak and naive. She deliberately maintains her sickly façade for her own amusing reasons. However, her act doesn’t fool the crown prince, Ji Yuansu, who recognizes her true nature from their childhood correspondence.

What Works

A Smart and Hilarious Female Lead

Hua Liuli (played by Meng Ziyi) is one of the most delightfully quirky female leads I’ve seen. She pretends to be sickly, but not out of fear or weakness, or as a strategy to fool their enemies. Instead, she aspires to be the “sickly beauty” that people will remember for ages. It’s an absurd and hilarious ambition that I can’t help but respect.

She’s smart, strategic, and well-versed in martial arts, although she rarely gets the chance to fight. Her cleverness shines throughout the drama, and it’s a joy to watch her navigate the dangerous world of palace politics while maintaining her playful and witty persona.

The Crown Prince and Their Chemistry

The crown prince, Ji Yuansu (played by Jeremy Tsui), immediately sees through Liuli’s façade, recognizing that the young woman in front of him is far different from the girl whose letters he used to receive when they were kids. Like Liuli, he also wears a mask. He pretends to be lazy, arrogant, and worthless while secretly gathering information and preparing for potential political conflicts.

I loved their dynamic: both strategic, both intelligent, and both able to match each other’s mental abilities. Their romance is a slow burn, but it’s smooth and satisfying. Their love language, sharing food and sweets, is genuinely charming. I love how equal and supportive their relationship feels.

Both Jeremy Tsui and Meng Ziyi did great jobs with their characters. They might not have been able to show that much range in their respective roles, but they clearly had fun with it, and I enjoyed both their portrayals.

Fun Side Characters

The side characters add a lot of charm to the drama. I love how Princess Jiamin and Liuli’s friendship developed. Jiamin and the first prince also have a fun storyline. I loved watching their characters and relationships develop over time.

Even minor characters bring moments of levity and humor. The drama builds a lighthearted and enjoyable atmosphere, perfect for viewers who want something entertaining without heavy tension or melodrama.

What Doesn’t Work

Many characters, including the main ones, are underutilized. For example, Hua Liuli’s martial arts skills are rarely showcased, which is disappointing given her background as the daughter of a general. I wish we could have seen more of her fighting and her and the prince fighting side by side.

Yu Han is another character who feels bland for most of the series, only becoming engaging in the last few episodes. Meanwhile, the main antagonist lacks depth, which makes the final battle feel anticlimactic. I just don’t care about the main antagonist at all.

Who Should Watch

Perfect for:

  • People who enjoy palace politics without overly heavy angst
  • People who like charming leads who are equals in intelligence
  • Fans of slow-burn romance with witty banter

Skip if:

  • You prefer fast-paced romance with a lot of angst
  • You want high-stakes, dark political drama with intense tragedy
  • You’re looking for heavy action or large-scale war sequences

Final Verdict

Royal Rumours is a fun, lighthearted drama with a quirky, smart heroine and a satisfying slow-burn romance. If you’re looking for a show that’s entertaining, charming, and easy to watch, this drama delivers. It won’t be the most memorable or action-packed series, but it’s enjoyable for what it is.
